Citadel head coach Duggar Baucom AP

The Citadel is making a change at the top of its men’s basketball program.

Bulldogs head coach Duggar Baucom will not be extended after seven seasons in Charleston, according to a news release.

Jeff Hartsell of the Post and Courier first reported the change shortly before the official announcement.

“The Citadel is grateful for Coach Baucom’s professionalism and dedication,” Citadel Athletic Director Mike Capaccio said in a news release. “We thank him for his leadership and the significant impact he made on our basketball program since he began coaching the Bulldogs in 2015. We wish Duggar the very best in his future endeavors.”

Baucom was 77-136 over his time in Charleston. He recorded just one winning season — a 13-12 campaign in 2020-21 — over that span.

The Citadel finished the 2021-2022 season 13-18 with a win over Pittsburgh to open the year. The Bulldogs went 6-12 in Southern Conference play and concluded their season with a loss to eventual league champion UT-Chattanooga in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament.

Baucom came to The Citadel after 10 seasons as the head coach at Virginia Military Institute. During his time coaching the Keydets, he recorded a pair of 20-win seasons and reached the CIT semifinals in 2014.

Prior to his time in Lexington, Virginia, Baucom was the head coach at Tusculum University in Tennessee for two seasons. He recorded a 37-19 record in that time.

Baucom was given a one-year extension at The Citadel in 2021, but the school decided not to renew his contract.

During a game at Duke earlier this year, the now-former Bulldogs head coach collapsed near the scorer’s table shortly after the contest tipped off. Baucom received medical attention on site before spending a night in the hospital.

“The last 7 years I’ve been blessed to coach some amazing young men who have taught me way more than I could ever teach them,” he told the Post and Courier.

The Citadel has won 20 games in a season just twice in school history, once in 1978-1979 and again in 2008-2009. The Bulldogs have only recorded a winning record five times since the turn over the century.

“We are actively looking for a new head coach to lead our basketball team to the next level,” Capaccio continued. “We hope to have that person in place and ready to go before training for the next season begins.”
